Daily Practices – Week 3 – Day 3

THEME: Jesus is calling me to slow down.

GRACE: Lord, let me hear Your voice as I make space to listen.

Settling in:

  • In a journal, note the day, time, and place you’re sitting.
  • Open with a few moments of silence. Rest, and breathe deeply.
  • Complete the following sentence in your journal: Today, I feel ________________.
  • Read these words slowly (aloud or silently):

This is what the Lord says:

“Stand at the crossroads and look;

   ask for the ancient paths,

ask where the good way is, and walk in it,

and you will find rest for your souls.” (Jeremiah 6:16a, NIV)

  • Pause for a few moments of silence.

Practice:

  • Choose one of the following practices.

Option 1: Daily Office – The Lord’s Prayer [5-30 minutes]

One way to pursue simplicity is by infusing our normal day with a rhythm of prayer. Anglicans call this practice the “Daily Office,” a set of prayers that are meant to be prayed in the morning, mid-day, and evening. This simple pause reminds us that no matter what we are focused on in the moment, God is in control and His kingdom should be our greatest desire.

Today, we will practice a rhythm of prayer by reciting the Lord’s prayer at three specific times. Pray through the Lord’s prayer now, and pray as slowly as time will allow. Let each phrase rest in your mind and consider what that phrase might mean for you today.

Our Father, who art in heaven

hallowed be Thy Name

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power

and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

When you are finished, set an alert to remind you to pray at noon and before bed-time. When the alarm rings, take a small moment and quietly recite the words of this prayer. Enjoy these moments of stillness and simplicity.

Option 2: Daily Office [30-60 minutes]

One way to pursue simplicity is by infusing our normal day with a rhythm of prayer. Anglicans call this practice the “Daily Office,” a set of prayers that are meant to be prayed in the morning, mid-day, and evening. This simple pause reminds us that no matter what we are focused on in the moment, God is in control and His kingdom should be our greatest desire.

Take a moment to find three times during your day (morning, mid-day, and evening) that you could take a few moments to pray quietly. Set an alert to remind you at the mid-day and evening times. These prayers are easy to forget at first, but over time can become a life-giving rhythm.

When you are ready to pray through “Morning Prayer” from the Daily Office, visit the link below for the Trinity Mission. There you will find links to morning, mid-day and evening prayer. You can read along through the prayer, or listen along with the guided audio recording.

Enjoy these moments of stillness and simplicity throughout your day!

  • Summary: Write a brief summary (five sentences or less) of what you experienced during your Daily Office.
  • Closing Prayer: Lord, let me hear Your voice as I make space to listen.
