AfterWords | O Come, All You Unfaithful

AfterWords is a series of reflections by contributors as they share their personal experience of God in community at The Parish on Sundays.

A short read
by Ansley Thompson

When it feels like the world doesn’t need any more words except the ones set to music…

Both of these songs were sent to me by two different people in the last two weeks, and I just couldn’t stop listening to either one of them.

We’re at the end of another wonderful, terrible year, and as someone who deeply loves words… I think I’m fresh out of them. Right now, I think we just need a dose of beauty, and nothing offers that like music and art do.

So I hope these gifts of song bless you like they have me as we continue in the season of Advent, anticipating the coming of Jesus—both long ago as an infant King and one day when He will set all things right.

O Come, All You Unfaithful

WATCH / LISTEN HERE

Lyrics:
O come, all you unfaithful
Come, weak and unstable
Come, know you are not alone
O come, barren and waiting ones
Weary of praying, come
See what your God has done

Christ is born, Christ is born
Christ is born for you
O come, bitter and broken
Come with fears unspoken
Come, taste of His perfect love
O come, guilty and hiding ones
There is no need to run
See what your God has done

Christ is born, Christ is born
Christ is born for you

He’s the Lamb who was given
Slain for our pardon
His promise is peace
For those who believe
He’s the Lamb who was given
Slain for our pardon
His promise is peace
For those who believe

So come, though you have nothing
Come, He is the offering
Come, see what your God has done

A New Jerusalem Arise

LISTEN HERE

Lyrics:
No more sickness,
no more crying;
your mourning will turn to dancing.
I will make a pathway in the wilderness
and a river in the dry land.

No more hatred,
no indifference;
unfairness will yield to justice.
I will make a passage to a free land;
all colors there are blessings.

I will wipe all the tears from your eyes.
A new Jerusalem arise.
A new creation come alive;
Into the dawning after dark…arise!

Only kindness,
only goodness;
all people will live compassion.
Hand in hand they love and work together, walking in the Spirit.

I am making all things new.
After fire, after flood, after rain…
through the dark, through the doubt, through the pain…
I am making all things new.
