Summer Sabbath Practices – 7.4.2018

BREATH PRAYER: Jesus, transform my heart in this ordinary time.

CENTERING:

One generation shall praise your works to another and shall declare your power.
I will ponder the glorious splendor of your majesty and all your marvelous works.
They shall speak of the might of your wondrous acts, and I will tell of your greatness.
They shall publish the remembrance of your great goodness; they shall sing of your righteous deeds.

Psalm 145:4-7

SETTLING IN:

  • In a journal, note the day, time, and place you’re sitting.
  • Open with silence. Set a timer for 1, 3, or 5 minutes so you can be free to rest and breathe deeply.
  • Complete the following sentence in your journal: Today, I feel ________________.
  • Read the centering verse above slowly (aloud or silently).
  • Pause for a few moments of silence, then pray this week’s breath prayer.

PRACTICE:
CELEBRATION

As we celebrate our nation’s independence with friends and family, we are also invited to celebrate with God. The spiritual practice of celebration is not something that must only occur on major holidays. Celebration can be a way of life. When we celebrate with God, we simply examine the things that bring deep gladness to our hearts and lift them up to God as a way to celebrate Him and celebrate with Him.

Take a few moments and prayerfully examine reasons to celebrate in your life. What kinds of celebrations do you most enjoy?

Which of God’s blessings on our country resonate most deeply with you? Lift this blessing or blessings back up to God and praise Him for His great works.

What specific blessings do you expect to encounter today? Write these down in your journal and as you notice them in your day, offer up a silent prayer of celebration to God.

Summary: Write in your journal a brief summary (five sentences or less) of your practice.

Closing: Jesus, transform my heart in this ordinary time.
